    Estimating instantaneous sea-ice dynamics from space using the bi-static radar measurements of Earth Explorer 10 candidate Harmony

    This article describes the observation techniques and suggests processing methods to estimate dynamical sea-ice parameters from data of the Earth Explorer 10 candidate Harmony. The two Harmony satellites will fly in a reconfigurable formation with Sentinel-1D. Both will be equipped with a multi-angle thermal infrared sensor and a passive radar receiver, which receives the reflected Sentinel-1D signals using two antennas. During the lifetime of the mission, two different formations will be flown. In the stereo formation, the Harmony satellites will fly approximately 300 km in front and behind Sentinel-1, which allows for the estimation of instantaneous sea-ice drift vectors. We demonstrate that the addition of instantaneous sea-ice drift estimates on top of the daily integrated values from feature tracking have benefits in terms of interpretation, sampling and resolution. The wide-swath instantaneous drift observations of Harmony also help to put high-temporal-resolution instantaneous buoy observations into a spatial context. Additionally, it allows for the extraction of deformation parameters, such as shear and divergence. As a result, Harmony's data will help to improve sea-ice statistics and parametrizations to constrain sea-ice models. In the cross-track interferometry (XTI) mode, Harmony's satellites will fly in close formation with an XTI baseline to be able to estimate surface elevations. This will allow for improved estimates of sea-ice volume and also enables the retrieval of full, two-dimensional swell-wave spectra in sea-ice-covered regions without any gaps. In stereo formation, the line-of-sight diversity allows the inference of swell properties in both directions using traditional velocity bunching approaches. In XTI mode, Harmony's phase differences are only sensitive to the ground-range direction swell. To fully recover two-dimensional swell-wave spectra, a synergy between XTI height spectra and intensity spectra is required. If selected, the Harmony mission will be launched in 2028

    ESA's Ice Sheets CCI: validation and inter-comparison of surface elevation changes derived from laser and radar altimetry over Jakobshavn Isbræ, Greenland – Round Robin results

    In order to increase the understanding of the changing climate, the European Space Agency has launched the Climate Change Initiative (ESA CCI), a program which joins scientists and space agencies into 13 projects either affecting or affected by the concurrent changes. This work is part of the Ice Sheets CCI and four parameters are to be determined for the Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS), each resulting in a dataset made available to the public: Surface Elevation Changes (SEC), surface velocities, grounding line locations, and calving front locations. All CCI projects have completed a so-called Round Robin exercise in which the scientific community was asked to provide their best estimate of the sought parameters as well as a feedback sheet describing their work. By inter-comparing and validating the results, obtained from research institutions world-wide, it is possible to develop the most optimal method for determining each parameter. This work describes the SEC Round Robin and the subsequent conclusions leading to the creation of a method for determining GrIS SEC values. The participants used either Envisat radar or ICESat laser altimetry over Jakobshavn Isbræ drainage basin, and the submissions led to inter-comparisons of radar vs. altimetry as well as cross-over vs. repeat-track analyses. Due to the high accuracy of the former and the high spatial resolution of the latter, a method, which combines the two techniques will provide the most accurate SEC estimates. The data supporting the final GrIS analysis stem from the radar altimeters on-board Envisat, ERS-1 and ERS-2. The accuracy of laser data exceeds that of radar altimetry; the Round Robin analysis has, however, proven the latter equally capable of dealing with surface topography thereby making such data applicable in SEC analyses extending all the way from the interior ice sheet to margin regions. This shows good potential for a~future inclusion of ESA CryoSat-2 and Sentinel-3 radar data in the analysis, and thus for obtaining reliable SEC estimates throughout the entire GrIS

    ESA ice sheet CCI: derivation of the optimal method for surface elevation change detection of the Greenland ice sheet - round robin results

    For more than two decades, radar altimetry missions have provided continuous elevation estimates of the Greenland ice sheet (GrIS). Here, we propose a method for using such data to estimate ice-sheet-wide surface elevation changes (SECs). The final data set will be based on observations acquired from the European Space Agency’s Environmental Satellite (ENVISAT), European Remote Sensing (ERS)-1 and -2, CryoSat-2, and, in the longer term, Sentinel-3 satellites. In order to find the best-performing method, an intercomparison exercise has been carried out in which the scientific community was asked to provide their best SEC estimates as well as feedback sheets describing the applied method. Due to the hitherto few radar-based SEC analyses as well as the higher accuracy of laser data, the participants were asked to use either ENVISAT radar or ICESat (Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite) laser altimetry over the Jakobshavn Isbræ drainage basin. The submissions were validated against airborne laser-scanner data, and intercomparisons were carried out to analyse the potential of the applied methods and to find whether the two altimeters were capable of resolving the same signal. The analyses found great potential of the applied repeat-track and cross-over techniques, and, for the first time over Greenland, that repeat-track analyses from radar altimetry agreed well with laser data. Since topography-related errors can be neglected in cross-over analyses, it is expected that the most accurate, ice-sheet-wide SEC estimates are obtained by combining the cross-over and repeat-track techniques. It is thus possible to exploit the high accuracy of the former and the large spatial data coverage of the latter. Based on CryoSat’s different operation modes, and the increased spatial and temporal data coverage, this shows good potential for a future inclusion of CryoSat-2 and Sentinel-3 data to continuously obtain accurate SEC estimates both in the interior and margin ice sheet

    Sea-level change in the Dutch Wadden Sea

    Rising sea levels due to climate change can have severe consequences for coastal populations and ecosystems all around the world. Understanding and projecting sea-level rise is especially important for low-lying countries such as the Netherlands. It is of specific interest for vulnerable ecological and morphodynamic regions, such as the Wadden Sea UNESCO World Heritage region. Here we provide an overview of sea-level projections for the 21st century for the Wadden Sea region and a condensed review of the scientific data, understanding and uncertainties underpinning the projections. The sea-level projections are formulated in the framework of the geological history of the Wadden Sea region and are based on the regional sea-level projections published in the Fifth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC AR5). These IPCC AR5 projections are compared against updates derived from more recent literature and evaluated for the Wadden Sea region. The projections are further put into perspective by including interannual variability based on long-term tide-gauge records from observing stations at Den Helder and Delfzijl. We consider three climate scenarios, following the Representative Concentration Pathways (RCPs), as defined in IPCC AR5: the RCP2.6 scenario assumes that greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions decline after 2020; the RCP4.5 scenario assumes that GHG emissions peak at 2040 and decline thereafter; and the RCP8.5 scenario represents a continued rise of GHG emissions throughout the 21st century. For RCP8.5, we also evaluate several scenarios from recent literature where the mass loss in Antarctica accelerates at rates exceeding those presented in IPCC AR5. For the Dutch Wadden Sea, the IPCC AR5-based projected sea-level rise is 0.07±0.06m for the RCP4.5 scenario for the period 2018–30 (uncertainties representing 5–95%), with the RCP2.6 and RCP8.5 scenarios projecting 0.01m less and more, respectively. The projected rates of sea-level change in 2030 range between 2.6mma−1 for the 5th percentile of the RCP2.6 scenario to 9.1mma−1 for the 95th percentile of the RCP8.5 scenario. For the period 2018–50, the differences between the scenarios increase, with projected changes of 0.16±0.12m for RCP2.6, 0.19±0.11m for RCP4.5 and 0.23±0.12m for RCP8.5. The accompanying rates of change range between 2.3 and 12.4mma−1 in 2050. The differences between the scenarios amplify for the 2018–2100 period, with projected total changes of 0.41±0.25m for RCP2.6, 0.52±0.27m for RCP4.5 and 0.76±0.36m for RCP8.5. The projections for the RCP8.5 scenario are larger than the high-end projections presented in the 2008 Delta Commission Report (0.74m for 1990–2100) when the differences in time period are considered. The sea-level change rates range from 2.2 to 18.3mma−1 for the year 2100. We also assess the effect of accelerated ice mass loss on the sea-level projections under the RCP8.5 scenario, as recent literature suggests that there may be a larger contribution from Antarctica than presented in IPCC AR5 (potentially exceeding 1m in 2100). Changes in episodic extreme events, such as storm surges, and periodic (tidal) contributions on (sub-)daily timescales, have not been included in these sea-level projections.     Consistent estimates of sea level and vertical land motion based on satellite radar altimetry

    Satellite radar altimetry is often considered to be the most succesful spaceborne remote sensing technique ever. Satellite radar altimeters were designed for static geodetic and ocean dynamics applications. The goal of the geodetic mission phases, which have a dense ground-track spacing, is primarily to acquire information about the marine gravity field. This enables the estimation of mean dynamic topography (geographical sea surface height patterns due to ocean currents) and deep-ocean bathymetry. The primary goal of the oceanographic mission phases is to gain information about time-varying currents and ocean dynamics. TOPEX/Poseidon is the first altimetry mission to reveal sea surface height variations related to ocean dynamics as the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO). During the mission it became clear that secular changes in sea level could also be monitored. Already in 1995, Nerem (1995) computed a Global Mean Sea Level (GMSL) time series from the TOPEX/Poseidon data. Currently, the GMSL record spans 26 years, in which TOPEX/Poseidon time series is extended with the Jason-1&2&3 observations. The estimated secular trend of GMSL over the altimetry era is approximately 3 mm yr−1. The succes of the TOPEX/Poseidon mission spawned the Argo project with the deployment of the first floats in the year 2000. One argued that Argo would support the future Jason missions in separating changes into the two components (density and mass) of sea level. The Argo project aims to estimate temperature and salinity over a depth of 2000 meter using floats, which enable the estimation of density or steric sea level changes. By subtracting the steric signal from the absolute sea level measured by Jason (steric-corrected altimetry), the second component of sea level changes, mass, is estimated. The launch of the Gravity Recovery And Climate Experiment (GRACE) satellites in 2002 made it possible to independently validate oceanic mass variations. If the sum of the mass and steric components equals total sea level within the uncertainties, the sea level is said to be closed. Besides these two oceanic components, ocean bottom deformation or Vertical Land Motion (VLM) also affects the sea level observed by altimeters. Over the open ocean VLM signals are generally small after a correction for Glacial Isostatic Adjustment (GIA), but near large mass variations they might become significant. Additionally, tide-gauge records are affected by VLM changes, because they are connected to land. Therefore they measure sea level relative to the sea floor, while the satellite altimeters observe the absolute variations. To bring tide gauges in the same reference frame as the altimeters, corrections for VLM have to be applied, which is usually done with nearby Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) data...Physical and Space Geodes

    A noise autocovariance model for SAR altimeter measurements with implications for optimal sampling

    Earlier work has empirically demonstrated some advantages of an increased posting rate of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) altimeters beyond the expected ground resolution of about 320 m in Delay-Doppler (unfocused SAR, UFSAR) processing, corresponding to ∼20 Hz sampling. Higher posting rates of 40–80 Hz were shown to prevent spectral aliasing of the signal, enable to measure swell wave related signal distortions and may lead to a reduced root mean square error of 1 Hz estimates of Sea Surface Heights (SSH), radar cross section (sigma0) and Significant Wave Heights (SWH) from current SAR altimeters. These improvements were explained by the narrow noise autocovariance function of the waveform signal's power speckle noise in along-track direction on one hand, and frequency doubling by power detection (squaring of the signal) on the other. It has not been explained, however, why the power speckle noise decorrelates faster than anticipated by the predicted Doppler resolution, and whether this decorrelation depends on the altimeter and processing configuration. Also, it has not been shown explicitly that the estimates of SSH, SWH and sigma0 decorrelate in the same way. Describing the noise autocovariance function – or equivalently the noise power spectral density via the Wiener-Kintchin theorem – is necessary on two counts: Knowing the noise autocovariance allows to apply optimal filtering strategies that maximize precision on one hand, while the noise power spectral density predicts the frequencies contained in the noise (and signals), which in turn determines the required sampling frequency according to the Nyquist theorem. Using a newly derived analytic noise autocovariance model for UFSAR-processed altimeter data, we show that the swift signal decorrelation is mainly due to the observation geometry. Furthermore, our results demonstrate that the noise autocovariance functions of power speckle, SSH, SWH and sigma0 estimates in along-track direction are different and depend on the sea state. On top of that, the noise autocovariance functions are strongly dependent on the number of Doppler beams used for multilooking, the used retracker, and the processing choices such as antenna gain pattern compensation and windowing within the UFSAR processing (Level-1b). We validated our noise autocovariance model with segments of 42 Sentinel-3B overpasses. Our findings are in accordance to all earlier work, but indicate that the reported precision improvements with respect to 20 Hz may have been too optimistic and that the SSH, SWH and sigma0 generally decorrelate slower than the power speckle noise. We found that the required posting rate is always higher or equal to 40 Hz. Our results will potentially enable improved spectral analysis and optimal filtering of any UFSAR altimetry data. More importantly, our results can be used to trade off different aspects for determining an optimal posting rate in UFSAR altimeter processing in different sea states and with changing processing parameters, which is necessary in view of strict precision requirements of existing and future SAR altimetry missions.</p

    Sub-basin-scale sea level budgets from satellite altimetry, Argo floats and satellite gravimetry: a case study in the North Atlantic Ocean

    . In this study, for the first time, an attempt is made to close the sea level budget on a sub-basin scale in terms of trend and amplitude of the annual cycle. We also compare the residual time series after removing the trend, the semiannual and the annual signals. To obtain errors for altimetry and Argo, full variance–covariance matrices are computed using correlation functions and their errors are fully propagated. For altimetry, we apply a geographically dependent intermission bias (Ablain et al., 2015), which leads to differences in trends up to 0.8 mm yr−1 . Since Argo float measurements are non-homogeneously spaced, steric sea levels are first objectively interpolated onto a grid before averaging. For the Gravity Recovery And Climate Experiment (GRACE), gravity fields full variance–covariance matrices are used to propagate errors and statistically filter the gravity fields. We use four different filtered gravity field solutions and determine which post-processing strategy is best for budget closure. As a reference, the standard 96 degree Dense Decorrelation Kernel-5 (DDK5)-filtered Center for Space Research (CSR) solution is used to compute the mass component (MC). A comparison is made with two anisotropic Wiener- filtered CSR solutions up to degree and order 60 and 96 and a Wiener-filtered 90 degree ITSG solution. Budgets are computed for 10 polygons in the North Atlantic Ocean, defined in a way that the error on the trend of the MC plus steric sea level remains within 1 mm yr−1 . Using the anisotropic Wiener filter on CSR gravity fields expanded up to spherical harmonic degree 96, it is possible to close the sea level budget in 9 of 10 sub-basins in terms of trend. Wiener-filtered Institute of Theoretical geodesy and Satellite Geodesy (ITSG) and the standard DDK5-filtered CSR solutions also close the trend budget if a glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA) correction error of 10–20 % is applied; however, the performance of the DDK5-filtered solution strongly depends on the orientation of the polygon due to residual striping. In 7 of 10 sub-basins, the budget of the annual cycle is closed, using the DDK5-filtered CSR or the Wiener-filtered ITSG solutions. The Wiener-filtered 60 and 96 degree CSR solutions, in combination with Argo, lack amplitude and suffer from what appears to be hydrological leakage in the Amazon and Sahel regions. After reducing the trend, the semiannual and the annual signals, 24–53 % of the residual variance in altimetryderived sea level time series is explained by the combination of Argo steric sea levels and the Wiener-filtered ITSG MC. Based on this, we believe that the best overall solution for the MC of the sub-basin-scale budgets is the Wiener-filtered ITSG gravity fields. The interannual variability is primarily a steric signal in the North Atlantic Ocean, so for this the choice of filter and gravity field solution is not really signifi- cant.Physical and Space GeodesyGeoscience and Remote Sensin
